Wedding Guest Etiquette: What Should You Wear to a Wedding?

You open your mailbox and find a wedding invitation. Exciting! Then comes the next question: What am I supposed to wear? Choosing the right wedding guest attire can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re unsure how formal the event will be. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to figure out what’s appropriate.

Start Here: Check the Dress Code

Before shopping or planning your outfit, try these steps:
1. Check the couple’s wedding website for dress code details.
2. Ask the couple directly if you’re unsure how formal the event will be.
3. When in doubt, choose a polished, classic outfit that can work in multiple settings.

A good “safe” choice for masculine dressers is suit pants with a button-down shirt and tie, with a jacket if desired. For feminine dressers, consider dress pants with a dressy top or a long, flowing dress.

Most importantly, if the couple has specified a dress code, do your best to follow it. Wedding dress codes aren’t chosen at random. Couples often consider the venue, décor, overall atmosphere, and photography when selecting attire guidelines for their guests.

Understanding Common Wedding Dress Codes

Casual Wedding Attire

Wedding casual is usually more polished than everyday casual. Appropriate options may include:
• Dresses or skirts
• Dress pants and a nice top
• Dark, clean jeans paired with a dress shirt or blouse

Avoid:
• Clothing with holes or tears
• Graphic tees or clothing with large writing
• Athletic wear
• Pajamas (yes, it has happened)

Semi-Formal or Dressy Casual Attire

This is one of the most common wedding dress codes. Think polished, comfortable, and put-together. Great options include:
• Long dresses or dressy skirts
• Dress pants with a blouse
• Blazers or sport coats
• Dress shirts with or without a tie

Cocktail Attire

Cocktail attire is elegant without being overly formal. Consider:
• Knee-length dresses
• Dressy jumpsuits
• Suits with ties
• Dress shoes and refined accessories

White Tie Attire

White tie is the highest level of formal dress and is rarely seen at Nebraska weddings. If a couple specifies white tie attire, it’s important to follow the guidelines closely. Traditional attire includes:
• Floor-length ball gowns or evening gowns
• Formal gloves (optional in today’s world)
• Black tailcoat tuxedos
• White vest and white bow tie

Why Wedding Dress Codes Matter

A wedding dress code isn’t about making guests uncomfortable. It’s about helping create a cohesive atmosphere for the celebration. The couple may be trying to match the formality of the venue, complement their décor, or create a specific aesthetic for their wedding photos. Following the dress code shows respect for the effort they’ve put into planning their special day.

And here’s a friendly reminder: if you ignore the dress code, you’ll probably stand out. But not necessarily in the way you intended. When in doubt, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than noticeably underdressed.

Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and ready to celebrate the happy couple.
